GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) — The Grand River has always played a key role in Grand Rapids’ history, now you can go back in time and admire historical sites along the city’s greatest natural resource.
GR Walks is a smartphone app that guides users on an audio tour of landmarks with historical photos, maps, and notable facts about the people who helped build Grand Rapids.
The free app launched in 2013 with audio tours of Heritage Hill, Eastown, and East Hills. Now the tour of Grand Rapids’ historical riverwalk is available for download; it includes 15 stops and lasts about 90 minutes.
Creator Josh Leo says he was inspired by Rick Steves’ audio walking tours while traveling in Europe and wanted to learn more about Grand Rapids when he returned home.
He and partners at Calvin College have spent four years researching neighborhoods in the city. Other tours which will be launched this summer include the history of beer in Grand Rapids and Ramona Park, the former amusement park on Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids.
The app was a winner of Rick DeVos’ inaugural 5×5 Night in 2011.
GR Walks is free and available in the Apple iTunes Store and Android Market. Visit grwalks.com for more information.
